Investigating the Practice of Teaching Grammar in English Language Teaching Classrooms: The Case Of High Schools in Debre Berhan Town, Ethiopia

The main objective of this study was investigating the practice of teaching Grammar at Debre Berhan town preparatory schools grade eleven in focus. Data were collected from two schools via questionnaire, classroom observation and interview. In this regard, a questionnaire that consisted of 18 items was prepared and distributed to 21 English language teachers and also a questionnaire that consisted of 20 items was prepared and distributed to 148 grade eleven sample students. Besides, both 10 English language teachers and 14 grade eleven students were selected for interview purposively and they were interviewed. Subsequently, six ELT classrooms were selected purposively for actual classroom observation and they were observed while the teachers were teaching grammar and the students were learning grammar in ELT classrooms. The data obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observation were analyzed and interpreted Properly in both qualitative and quantitative way.. The qualitative data were analyzed by thematic analysis and the quantitative data were also described, explained, interpreted, discussed and summarized by frequency and percentages in tables. In general, the conclusions were drawn based on the major findings of the study and gathered data and the recommendations and the likely solutions were suggested. Finally, the findings of study indicated that English language teachers generally were teaching grammar communicatively by employing both deductive and inductive approaches of teaching grammar. However, students articulated a number of constraints that hamper the effective accomplishment of communicative teaching of grammar. Therefore, the researcher suggested that policy makers, syllabus designers, classroom teachers and other concerned bodies should take into account these issues
