Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity and is widely used for the treatment of various bacterial infections in animals and poultry worldwide. This study intended to evaluate the quality of enrofloxacin brands available in the Ugandan market. Two batches of eight different brands of enrofloxacin were purchased from veterinary pharmacies in Kampala and Mbarara cities. Standard physical and chemical tests for quality surveillance were performed on the brands according to the methods outlined in the US Pharmacopoeia (USP) 2013. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) using a UV-Vis detector was used for the quantitative determination of enrofloxacin in the various brands. Key compendial information was lacking on the label with only 37.5% (3/8) indicating the generic name, 87.5% (7/8) indicating the route of administration, and 25% (2/8) indicating the composition on the label. All the brands were clear solutions and met the clarity requirements. All the brands assessed showed statistically significant differences between the obtained pH values and the expected pH value of 7 as per USP specification at a P? 0.05. HPLC-UV analysis revealed that the mean drug concentrations in all the brands were within the compendial specifications of USP.
