This study
provides an analysis of two current models of
dissertation/thesis examination; American and European/British
and their philosophical rationale. It brings out the key
differences between two models and suggests that there is a need
for synchronization of dissertation examination procedures and
standards across the countries as globalization proceeds. A
conceptual model of dissertation examination followed by a set
of key action rules to ensure implementation of the examination
model. The study highlights that there are more safeguards in
the American model for quality control than in the European one,
without concluding that one is superior to other.
Key words:
Thesis, dissertation, external examiner, internal examiner,
American model, European model.
