SECOND BSK COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY (BIOINFORMATICS) TRAINING WORKSHOP,
11-13 AUGUST
Venue: Kenyatta University, Thika Road, Nairobi
Call for Applications
The Biochemical Society of Kenya and Kenyatta University will host a 3-day introductory course on Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics (Computational Biology) is a relatively new field that applies computer science and information technology to biology. The objective of this workshop is to introduce participants to basic information with much hands-on activities. We aim to encourage participants to apply genome information in their research, as they seek solutions to the diverse problems they address. The course is designed to offer an introduction to bioinformatics/computational biology. 25 participants will be selected from applicants who comply with the application procedures. The organizing committee would like to have a group of participants that is representative of the institutions from which the membership of BSK is drawn. We will therefore seek to be as representative as possible, within the constraints of the application procedures. The course content will include:
POPULATION
GENETICS
Ø Sampling
populations
Ø Techniques
in population genetics
Ø Analysis

SEQUENCE
SEARCHING RETRIEVAL & ANALYSIS
Ø How
genomic data is generated
Ø Global

Application procedures: Request application forms from BSK (bsk@icipe.org). Complete the forms and follow
the deadlines indicated below.
Note: There is no registration fee but membership of the BSK is a participation condition for all participants from Kenya. Applicants who are not already members of BSK are informed that membership application forms will be available during registration. Non-membership is therefore not an impediment to applicants. Priority will be given to applicants whose home institutions have Internet facilities. Please send any queries to bsk@icipe.org
